Monreale and Piana
degli Albanesi

The most splendid monument of the middle
ages stands in the small town of Monreale which lies 8 kilometres
Southeast of Palermo. The world famous Norman Cathedral, built by William
II in 1174 displays precious bronze doors and houses magnificent 12th
century gold Byzantine mosaics. By climbing the cathedral tall tower you
will be rewarded with breathtaking views across the lush countryside and
extensive vineyards of the Conca d'Oro valley. Another of its treasures to
be savoured is the cloister with over 200 columns - all unique in design,
which is all that remains of the Benedictine Abbey.
The ancient town of Piana degli Albanesi lies approximately 30
kilometres south-west of Palermo. Little changed over the
centuries it was founded by Albanians whose culture is still prominent today. The town is surrounded by rolling green
countryside and its main street is dominated by 3 churches,
the most important being the 16th century San Demitrio. It is
also famous for its production of Cannolo – a sweet crisp
pastry shell filled with ricotta cheese. |
